Umbilical Cord Clamp

When a woman is delivering a baby, it is the surgeon’s job to separate the baby from the woman’s placenta which provides the fetus with oxygen throughout the time it is in the womb of the mother. In order to remove the baby from the placenta, a surgeon makes use of a gynecological instrument which is called the umbilical cord clamp. This clamp is used by the surgeon to cut the placenta and hence free the baby from the womb. The first step consists of using the umbilical cord clamp to clamp the cord itself while it is being cut. In some cases, the clamp is left on by the surgeons for many days in order to allow the cord attached to the baby to dry out.

The umbilical cord clamp is a gynecological instrument which comes in a variety of appearances. Most of these clamps are made using plastic and the cord usually consists of teeth in the front which fit together when the instrument is closed i.e. clamped. Some of these cords have a variety of fittings on the side of the clamp which is open in order to ensure that the instrument can be used in a secure manner. Many countries produce this particular kind of gynecological instrument however China and India are very well known for making the umbilical cord clamp.

Most umbilical cords are sold in a large supply to be bought by hospitals and they are often sold alongside another gynecological instrument. The downside is that an individual cannot buy a single umbilical cord clamp; it needs to be bought in bulk however this is clearly an advantage for hospitals that need instruments in bulk. These umbilical cord clamps and other gynecological instruments are long lasting which is another added benefit.

Every child who is born does not always have an umbilical cord clamp. Parents at times prefer to cut the cord and to let the cord fall off in the upcoming days. Sometimes, this gynecological instrument is not used; rather than cord is tied up using tape. This however has led to much debate over which of the two methods is the healthiest.

A topic concerning the umbilical cord clamp consists of when to apply this clamp and when to cut the cord to release the baby from the cord. In the past, the standard waiting period was 1 minute however now evidence suggests that surgeons should wait for almost 3 minutes to cut the cord as this ensures that the blood flow between the baby and the placenta is maintained and does not affect the iron in the blood.

Not only does this particular gynecological instrument provide stability to the umbilical cord, it also cuts the communication of the baby with the placenta. This is a process which is considered to be highly natural however there are some individuals who feel that this can be a difficult aspect for the child. It severs the connection of the baby with his mother however once the baby is out of the womb, the feeling is exceptional. One of the kind of of clamps used by surgeons is Waller umbilical clamp cutters.
