Needle Holder

There are many times when people walk into the emergency rooms of hospitals to get sutures for their wounds. One of the main instruments which is used to suture up patients wounds is called a needle holder. This is an instrument which falls under the category of surgical instruments as well as gynecological instruments. The needle holder is used to pass the needle through the wound so that the torn tissue can be stitched up. This surgical and gynecological instrument is can be re-used after being sterilized.

Since a needle holder is commonly used to suture up wounds, it is also used when a woman is delivering a baby. In order to stitch up any of wounds which are a result of the delivery process, the surgeon makes use of a needle holder to ensure that the surgical needle is held in place while the suture is being done to ensure that the wound is closed up properly.

The handle of the needle holder is common to that of a scissor. This ensures that the surgeon can easily hold on to the gynecological instrument while performing the procedure. The thumb is inserted into one side of the instrument and the forefinger is placed into the other side ensuring that a proper grip is provided to the doctor. When the surgeon opens his fingers, the clamp opens allowing the needles to be held in place and worked with. Once the fingers are moved closer together, the needle holder too closes.

In order to use the needle holder as a gynecological instrument, the surgeon needs to grasp the needle holder very firmly. The needle holder needs to be maneuvered in a smooth and efficient manner to ensure that the stitches are kept as clean as possible to ensure that there is no scar which remains. By using the needle holder, the surgeon can then move the needle smoothly and suture up the wounds. A particular mechanism is also used to firmly ensure that the needle is held in place of the jaws while the procedure is being performed. While the surgeon inserts the needle into the woman’s tissue to stitch up her wounds, the surgeon must place a good amount of pressure consistently to complete the process well. Hence, a needle holder is a very important gynecological instrument and no surgeon can do without this kind of instrument.

Once the surgeon begins his/her work and inserts the needle into the tissue and flesh of the woman, the surgeon released the lock which then gives the surgeon the ability to place the needle holder where he may wish. Once the surgeon has locked the position of where he wishes the needle holder to be, the needle is then grasped another time after locking the needle holder which ensures that he has a firm grip on the needle while working. The needle is continuously pulled through the skin until the process is not finished and the wound of the once pregnant woman is not closed. Different types of needle holders which surgeons use are Brown Micro needle holders and Mayo-Hegar Micro Needle Holders.
